Major Projects - St Matthew's Quarter
The opening of the largest town centre ASDA in the country in July 2007 - a £25 million-plus development - was a major demonstration of confidence in Walsall as a vibrant 21st century retail and leisure destination.
The commitment of ASDA to work with Jobcentre Plus, the college and other key local partners in a high profile recruitment campaign has been widely recognised as a demonstration of best practice. The formation of this Retail Academy was hosted and guided by WRC.
The advanced stage of the phase two development was brought to an abrupt halt by the major fire at Shannons Mill. Demolition of the significantly damaged listed building has, however, encouraged the developers to review their proposals for later phases of the St Matthew’s Quarter scheme.
These proposals are being developed against the context of a Walsall town centre that will see £500 million of development before the end of 2010 - clearly a very different proposition from that facing the developers six months previously. The new scheme will reinforce Walsall’s ambitious regeneration plans and contribute significantly to its re-emergence as a 21st century retail and leisure destination.
It is anticipated that the new scheme will have a combination of high quality restaurants and bars and is likely to include a cinema, with a definite appeal to a more mature market which will reflect the town’s increased and broad customer base meeting enhanced consumer needs with a vibrancy and energy that reflects Walsall’s dynamism.
